Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to some of the most common questions about piano tuning, care, and maintenance. If you have a question that isn’t answered here, please contact us!

How often should my piano be tuned?+
Most manufacturers recommend tuning your piano at least twice a year. New pianos, or those in environments with significant temperature or humidity changes, may need more frequent tuning. Pianos that are played infrequently can be tuned annually to manitain appropriate tension on the strings.
Why does my piano go out of tune?+
Pianos go out of tune primarily due to changes in humidity and temperature, which cause the wooden parts and strings to expand and contract. Regular playing and the natural settling of the instrument also contribute.
Why does my piano feel hard to play?+
If your piano keys feel stiff or heavy, it may be due to mechanical issues, lack of maintenance, or humidity affecting the action. A technician can diagnose and regulate the action for a smoother touch.
Is it safe to dust the soundboard?+
Yes, but use a soft, dry cloth or a feather duster. Avoid using water or cleaning products, and never vacuum inside the piano, as this can damage delicate parts.
How long does a tuning appointment take?+
A typical tuning appointment takes about 1.5 to 2.0 hours. If your piano needs additional repairs or adjustments, it may take longer.
What is “regulation” and do I need it?+
Regulation refers to the adjustment of the piano’s mechanical parts to ensure optimal touch and responsiveness. Over time, felt and wood compress or shift, and regulation restores the piano’s playability. Most pianos benefit from regulation every few years.
Can you fix sticky or broken keys?+
Yes! Most sticky or broken keys can be repaired during a service visit. Let us know in advance so we can bring any necessary parts.
Is it okay to move my piano?+
Upright and grand pianos are heavy and delicate. Always use professional piano movers. After moving, allow the piano to acclimate for a few weeks before tuning.
What should I do if my piano gets wet?+
If your piano is exposed to water, dry the exterior immediately and contact a technician. Water can cause serious damage to wood, felt, and metal parts if not addressed quickly.
Will my pet interfere with the tuning process?+
Your pets are welcome to hang out and enjoy listening to the tuning.
